Now What?

You may be looking to private care to help bridge the gap while your regular daycare or school is closed.

Embolden PDC is here to support you as you make your next steps.

Below you will find some important information regarding private care in Alberta and how you can ensure your children’s safety while utilizing care from the private sector.

Private Childcare in Alberta

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Private providers ARE permitted to continue caring for children in Alberta during the COVID-19 pandemic. They must still follow typical Alberta law, but as they are unregulated by the Alberta Government, AHS cannot mandate them to follow any additional safety measures. You must ensure that you understand your risks when choosing private care, and that you are diligent in securing a private provider who is committed to following the guidelines as laid out by AHS.

THE BOTTOM LINE

  • Private care in Alberta is not regulated
  • Private providers can only care for 6 non-biological children at any one time
  • Private providers cannot team up and care for more than 6 non-biological children under one roof
  • Private providers cannot offer subsidy

THE MINIMUM STANDARDS YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR IN A PRIVATE PROVIDER

  • Insurance
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Criminal Record Checks

These things keep your children safe, and should not be compromised despite the urgency and desperation we are feeling right now.

It will absolutely take a village to get through this, but we must continue to hold ourselves to the high level of standards that many private providers have worked so hard to establish here in Alberta.

IF YOU ARE SEEKING PRIVATE CARE FOR THE DURATION OF THE CLOSURES

Embolden PDC is in the process of compiling a database of private providers who are offering care during the pandemic. You can submit a request for care by clicking on the button below and filling out the google form.

HERE IS SOME ADDITIONAL INFO FROM THE CHIEF HEALTH OFFICER OF ALBERTA.

“Yesterday, we also announced that all licenced childcare facilities, out-of-school care programs and preschools were to close immediately.

“I know many parents are looking for child care arrangements, such as private child care providers. While they are able to remain open, these unlicensed day homes can only care for up to six children, not including their own, at any one time.

“These arrangements are not monitored by the province, and I encourage parents to seek out more information to make informed decisions.
